In modern times, boys, who are becoming men, are called to be individuals, to follow their own quests, but first they must peel away the successive layers of story that have bound them to their time and place.
Rather than encourage the process of self-discovery, modern institutions push men into compliance in an attempt to transform them into economic commodities.
Modern institutions seldom encourage young men to explore their values nor to think critically, and they don’t teach necessary truths about myth, psychology, emotions, fulfillment, education, money, careers, spirituality, relationships, or sex.
I wrote this letter for my son, so he would have a reference point for his own individuation quest, a map if you will, and now I’ve decided to share it with you.
