PSYCHE, THE PSYCHE

These words are not my own and I take no credit for them. I share them here as a resource for anyone seeking personal growth or as source material for their own creative expansion of the collective.

The spirit is the life of the body scene from within, and the body the outward manifestation of the life of the spirit – the two being really one.

When the potentiality of the psyche is not used it becomes perverted.

The perspective of Jungian analytical psychology affirms the reality of the psyche, the unconscious holder of symbols, images and messages of blockages, compensations and hopes. Dreams are like crystals to be turned to the many facets of the personality. They are natural ways of dealing with problems and help restore balance to one-sided attitudes from the negative father complex. Dreams are both subjective and objective, reflecting inner and outer figures and situations. Jung stated: 'Only they are always a little bit ahead of the dreamer's consciousness'.

Being a part, man cannot grasp the whole. He is at its mercy. He may assent to it, or rebel against it; but he is always caught up by in and enclosed within it.

Through one-sidedness the psyche disintegrates and loses its capacity for cognition it becomes an unreflective (because unreflectable) succession of psychic states, each of which fancies itself its own justification because it does not, or does not yet, see any other state.

In regard to the psyche, however, the archaic conceptions hold on tenaciously: the psyche has no antecedents, is a tabula rasa, arises anew at birth, and it’s only what it is it imagines itself to be. Consciousness is phylogenetically and ontogenetically a secondary phenomenon. It is time this obvious fact were grasped at last. Just as the body has an anatomical pre-history of millions of years, so also does the psychic system.

Just as all energy proceeds from opposites, so the psyche possesses its inner polarity.

Our psyche is set up in accord with the structure of the universe, and what happens in the macrocosm likewise happens in the infinitesimal and most subjective reaches of the psyche.

There is the general feeling, to be sure, that we have reached a significant turning point in the ages, but people imagine that the great change has to do with nuclear fission and fusion, or with space rockets. What is concurrently taking place in the human psyche is usually overlooked.

Prejudice cripples and injures the full phenomenon of psychic life.

In the living psychic structure, nothing takes place in a merely mechanical fashion; everything fits into the economy of the whole, relates to the whole. That is to say, it is all purposeful and has meaning. But because consciousness never has a view of the whole, it usually cannot understand this meaning.

The primitive psyche of man borders on the life of the animal soul, just as the caves of prehistoric times were usually inhabited by animals before men laid claim to them.
